Disclosure: This is part of my all expense paid trip to San Francisco, CA provided by Disney. However, typos, mispelled words and opinions are 100% mine.
Wish Upon a Star: The Art of Pinocchio exhibit was one of the great sights we got to see during the Rogue One Event Disney press trip to San Francisco a few weeks ago. Pinocchio turns 77 this year, and to celebrate his birthday, Disney is releasing a collectible Pinocchio Signature Collection Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital HD pack. Disney celebrated one of their most beloved characters in another way as well. They shared the Wish Upon a Star: The Art of Pinocchio exhibit at The Walt Disney Family Museum with the world, as well! Returning to the museum is always a great thing!
The Art of Pinocchio – Celebrating a Classic Disney Character
Although we were all there for a sneak peek at Rogue One, I was incredibly excited to get a look at The Art of Pinocchio exhibit. I’ve loved Pinocchio since I first saw the movie when I was a little girl. I loved his adventures, and how he learned the difference between right and wrong. It was one of those movies that had me telling everyone around me, “He shouldn’t have done that!” or, “That was a good thing he did!” It just drew me in, and I’ve loved it ever since. So being able to see how one of my most favorite Disney films was made was a HUGE dream come true for me.
We saw so many different pictures of the prop used then. One I enjoyed was the the picture of Vladimir Tytla as he assembled pieces of the story. Simply fascinating, rooms and rooms of original artwork, so much history packed in this museum!
The exhibit was open to the public from May 18th, 2016 until today, actually. January 10th, 2017
A Guided Tour of the Art of Pinocchio
Not only did I and my fellow bloggers get to tour the exhibit. We got a guided tour. Our “tour guide” for the exhibit was John Canemaker, an Emmy and Peabody Award winning independent animator, historian, teacher, and author. So he KNOWS his stuff. He took us on a tour of this exhibit that fully immerses those who walk through it in the production process of an era that came far, far earlier than computers, CGI, and green screens.
We got to see amazing original concept artwork for the film, memorabilia, photography, models, and more. It’s amazing to think that these talented artist created such an enduring and classic film with nothing but their hands! Think about it. From concept art to models and all the rest, it was all done without computers or programs. It was nothing but pure imagination and artistic hands. Amazing.
Of course, we were all given the grand tour of Wish Upon a Star: The Art of Pinocchio, but there is SO much more to see at The Walt Disney Family Museum. They have exhibits on SO many beloved characters and settings. They even have a miniature model of the park! It is truly an epic experience for any Disney Lover.
