The Catch is the break out new drama from ABC, and it’s no wonder this show is going off big time. From the intrigue to the romance to the betrayal to the gorgeous clothes, this is a show that just exudes camp, style, and sass. And let’s not forget that the entire thing is one big cat and mouse game. It’s so much fun!
As part of the #CaptainAmericaEvent recent visit to LA, my fellow bloggers and I got to go behind the scenes of The Catch and have a Q & A session with costume designer, Peggy Schnitzer. She’s the one who makes it all happen. Every gorgeous dress, well tailored suit, and all the extras that go with them are under her stylish wing.
The Catch is Literally Styling and Profiling
To coin an old school 90’s phrase, this show is styling and profiling. For real, it actually is. One of the first things we got to see when we arrived at the wardrobe department, were photo albums. LOTS of photo albums. They were all filled with pictures of every single outfit ever worn by the cast. It was so interesting to see this photo record of all the beautiful clothes, but it was even more interesting to learn why they had them.
Peggy told us the albums are used to document every outfit for every episode. They’re used as a record for what the actors should wear during different shoot times. “If we’re here doing interiors,” she said, “and then a week later, they’re doing exteriors, they know exactly [what the actors should wear], so they match it up by the pictures.”
If you’ve watched The Catch at all, you’ve probably notice the distinct old school vibe of the clothing coupled with a modern flair. When asked about how she goes about picking pieces for the cast, she said, “I pretty much stick to solid colors because I think it works best for this. There’s a lot going on, and they can be distracting sometimes.” She further elaborated on the throw back feel of the wardrobe, saying, “My aesthetic by choice is very 60’s/early 70’s because it always looks best for their bodies.”
And speaking of design. Remember the wedding dress that Alice wore? You know the one with the sleek lines and 30’s sensibility? Well, Peggy designed it! While I’m super impressed, I can’t say it’s surprising, with an eye like here. She said she just “had to do it once.” She got 30’s wedding dresses and used them as inspiration for this icon piece from The Catch.
Peggy and her team make it all work by recognizing the limitations placed upon them by the sets themselves. One thing I never thought of before was all the glass and light colors in the show. Peggy told us that those things make a difference in the wardrobe. “Their office,” she said, “their business, AVI, is all glass and white. We can’t do like a lot of lights and beiges.”
And speaking of the offices. They were just a part of the sets we got to see. It was so amazing to see everything that goes into the sets of The Catch. Even though these sets are designed to give the illusion of real life, they put SO MUCH work into them that they are practically real. From the decor to all the artwork. the sets are just as rich in person as they are on the television screen.
The Dream Team
While Peggy may be the driving force of the wardrobe department, she has some majorly talented help, as well. Carlos Zepeda, her resident tailor, does all the alterations for the show, making each and every actor and actress look spectacular in their outfits. Peggy sand his praises for the job he does saying, “Instead of taking the easy way out, when something is too long or too short, he’ll cut it from the arm and like bring it up. It’s all very intricate, and he’s a one man show.”
Leo Castro is her costume supervisor and runs her department, making sure everything runs smoothly. Anita Cabada, her assistant costume designer, it the only other shopper for The Catch besides Peggy, which is a big responsibility.
Working together as a unit, Peggy, Carlos, Leo, and Anita manage to bring us the beautiful, well-fitted looks we all know and love about The Catch each and every week. They’re a well-oiled style machine!
The Catch – So Stylish
The campy, cat and mouse story of The Catch, is fun! I love the style just as much! It was such a joy to meet Peggy, and get an inside look into how she and her incredibly talented team bring us the fantastic looks we see every week on the Catch. I know I’ll never look at what the cast is wearing the same way again!
If you haven’t seen The Catch yet, it’s not too late! Catch up on all the past episodes On Demand and then watch the current episodes every Thursday night at 10pm EST on ABC.
