After years of having Pennsylvania on my bucket list, my dream came true this year. First when I visited the Pocono Mountains in August and recently Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, during a familiarization tour. The tour was part of the “Live The Life You Want” campaign, hosted by the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & Capital Region Economic Development Corp. What a stunning, breathtaking city! Its postcard beauty, job opportunities, low cost of living, and culture make it a wonderful place to live and work. But Harrisburg has been shadowed by the big city. That really should change, because Harrisburg is the perfect place to live the life you want.
This campaign’s concentration is to promote, attract and retain talent to the region, especially Yuppies, (young professionals) due to its recent consistent job openings, as well as those considering relocating to one of the best places to raise a family: Harrisburg/Hershey, PA.
Harrisburg – Live the Life You Want. Live it Well
Harrisburg and the surrounding area is a fantastic place to live in. It has all the beauty of New England and all the charm. It also has no shortage of employment opportunities, they have more jobs than qualified people to fill them! What? And with its low cost of living and so much to do in the area, those employment opportunities become life opportunities. Here’s what Linda Goldstein had to say about Harrisburg:
“Now is the time to start tooting our own horn,” said Linda Goldstein, Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC VP & COO. “Our region has so much to offer – great job opportunities with some of the nation’s top companies, art, music, nightlife, premiere educational institutions, unmatched cost of living…the list goes on. But, we are losing talent to larger cities; therefore we must communicate with these folks and share our story. And that’s what Live The Life You Want does. It helps people understand the benefits of living and working here. Because we all deserve to live the life we want! And there’s no better place than the Harrisburg area.”
Harrisburg – Everything You Need
Did you know that Forbes, ranked the Harrisburg/Hershey, PA the 3rd Pennsylvania city for Best Places for Business and Careers – beating out Philadelphia? Their chamber of commerce is working hard to ensure that Harrisburg becomes the place to settle down in Pennsylvania, and its easy to see why. Touring the Harrisburg area was unforgettable. The tour was packed with surprising visits.
My daughter is in her second year of college, so I’m still in education mode. I was quite impressed with the educational system of Harrisburg. Their high schools and colleges are some of the best in the area, making Harrisburg an even more attractive area for families and according Teach & Travel magazine, Pennsylvania is one of Top 10 States for Student Travel in U.S. A few highlights of the Harrisburg/Hershey area that I visited:
HACC – The Harrisburg area community college, helping young men and women prepare for their futures. HACC is one of the many area schools of higher education located in the region. Since its first graduation ceremony, 49.405 students have graduated. HACC currently serves nearly 19,000 degree-seeking students. They have 5 campuses: Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York, as well as off-site learning locations and virtual classes.
Milton Hershey High School
A living legacy, this school’s motto is “Living the Legacy”. It was founded by Milton and Catherine Hershey in 1909. They had no children of their own, so they decided to help all the children that they could. The visit to Milton Hershey School was one of my favorite parts of this trip. It’s an amazing tribute to the philanthropy that exists within people. Milton Hershey is a boarding school for children of low income families providing a safe and supportive environment. Their programs are design to allow students to develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, and socially. It’s the kind of place we need more of, because it fosters the next generation of children to be better than they or we ever thought possible.Dickinson College
Dickinson College and Dickinson School of Law are located in downtown Carlisle, in Cumberland County. Ranking 12th Best Metro for Law School Graduates in the United States according to Goodcall. Founded in 1783 by Benjamin Rush with 2,308 full-time students.
I was surprised to learn that 50% of the students study abroad thanks to the long distance education they offer. Other colleges in the area include Harrisburg University, Eastern University, Temple University campus, Penn State Harrisburg campus, and many others.
It’s not unusual for college students upon graduation, to look for careers away from home; my daughter already decided not to return to Florida when she graduates. Harrisburg and the surrounding area are tailor made for people who want to live and live well. It may not be the big city, but what it lacks in mysterious adventure, it makes up for with the potential for a great life. With employment opportunities all around and no shortage of night life, culture, entertainment, and a low cost of living, Harrisburg is a spot worth considering putting down roots.
So you see? The Harrisburg/Hershey, PA is one of those rare places that combines friendly, neighborhood living with everything you’d expect in a metropolitan setting. With an emphasis on education and employment, as well as friendly communities, culture, and entertainment, Harrisburg, PA has everything for everyone.
