Thrilled to announce that we have been invited to The DREAM Project Annual Private event Sueños! This year the event will take place on November 10, 2016 in my favorite city, New York City to honor Dascha Polanco as their DREAMer of the Year.
The 5th annual Sueños benefit helps to secure much needed funding for this non-profit that does so much good, as well as honoring those who strive to do as much good as possible for the Dominican community. It’s a true honor to have received an invitation to celebrate my Dominican heritage and help raise awareness for the good work that The DREAM Project does for Dominican youth.
The DREAM Project is all about helping youth in underserved parts of the Dominican Republic to reach their full potential. DREAM stands for Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring. It started in 1995 when a group of Dartmouth College students visited Cabarete, Dom. Rep. to volunteer for one semester. This non-profit organization focuses squarely on early childhood education, high quality primary education, holistic youth development, and arts, culture, and community enrichment. The DREAM Project believes that Dominican youth EVERYWHERE deserves a chance to shine, by polishing that talent!
The DREAM Project is Dreaming Big to Make Dreams Come True
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful, special place, my native land. It’s filled with nature’s wonder, extraordinary people, exquisite food, lively music and a sense of pride that I haven’t found anywhere else. Unfortunately, there are many parts of the Dominican Republic that are also full of poverty. The DREAM Project focuses on allowing the youth of those areas to reach their full potential. As the proud mother of an NYU sophomore student, it’s a very special organization for me. I can’t imagine my daughter not being able to reach her full potential just because of a lack of resources. The DREAM Project aims to remove those roadblocks and allow the youth of areas that are not as well off to shine. The following is a recap of when Leslie Grace and Henry Santos visited the school last year!
Sueños Honors Those Working Hard to Help Dominican Youth
This year, the 5th annual Sueños Benefit will honor Dascha Polanco, actress and star of the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black”, as DREAMer of the Year. Dascha is being honored for her philanthropic work including a new Theater and Arts Program she is currently developing for youth in the Dominican Republic. Her commitment to helping the youth in the Dominican Republic who need it most is directly in line with what The DREAM Project is doing, which makes her the perfect honoree, in my opinion.
In addition to honoring Dascha Polanco. The DREAM Project will also honor JetBlue Airways, their Corporate DREAMer of the Year and DREAM Educator of the Year, author Ana Galan. JetBlue is being recognized for their work with DREAM since 2008 and their Soar with Reading Program. Gala is to be honored for her work in children’s literacy with her book “Un Leon en Cabarete” in partnership with The DREAM Project and more than 20 youth participating in the Young Stars Program.
