The U.S. Virgin Islands have always been in my bucket list! Gorgeous sand. Beautiful vistas. They seem to be rich in culture, history so much more……and they are! That’s right. It’s all there, and it’s all so very easily accessible. I learned so much about these islands.
U.S. Virgin Islands Event
I was invited to a U.S. Virgin Islands media mixer, and it was a fabulous experience. I got to mingle with some other media folks, learn more about the islands, and get a small taste of the tropical wonder that’s right outside my door! The event took place in Winter Park, Florida at the beautiful Hamilton Kitchen Restaurant in the Alfond Inn. We got to hang out in a wonderful setting while we learned more about the Islands than I never knew. To be honest, before this, I only knew how beautiful they were, without really knowing much about the culture. The commissioner of Tourism for the USVI was present, and she enlightened all of us on so much about the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Commissioner gave us the scoop on some great events coming up like the Centennial Celebrations in 2017, culinary events like Dine VI, and the Department of Tourism’s continued quest to enhance the visitor experience. The U.S. Virgin Island’s 2nd Annual restaurant week returns to all three islands, St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas this fall! A heck of a celebration of all their local restaurant scene and the culinary diversity. Indulge in cuisine inspired by traditional fare and dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.
A Little About the U.S. Virgin Islands
Did you know that Orlando is the gateway to the USVI? That is great because not only do I live nearby, but it is a hot tourism area where many can continue on to visit the islands! The USVI also has 7 churches that are over 200 years old and the second oldest synagogue in the Western world! That’s pretty amazing. 2017 marks the centennial of the US Virgin Islands becoming a territory of the US. 100 years ago, we bought it from Denmark for $25 million in gold. I’d call that a bargain!
The USVI are made up of St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix, and each island has it’s own unique historical flair. Their beautiful beaches draw hordes of tourists every year, and with no passport needed, it’s easy to get there. That’s right, because the US Virgin Islands are a territory of the United States, you get a little tropical adventure with the comfort of knowing you’re still in the States! We received some awesome goodies also!
