Winter Health Tips to Keep Your Kids at Their Best
Winter health tips can help you keep your kids feeling their best throughout the cold and flu season. This time of year brings family, fun, and holiday memories. With Thanksgiving on the horizon and Christmas soon to follow, we’re looking at a couple of months of pure fun for the kiddos. We’re also looking at the season that puts out kids at the most risk for colds, the flue, and the always fun creeping crud. These winter health tips can help you keep at least most of that winter sickness at bay so you and your family con focus on fun and not on feeling like the walking dead.
Winter Health Tips for a Great Holiday Season
Let’s face it, being sick is the pits. I mean, it is the absolute worst. And if it’s horrible for adults, it’s doubly terrible for children. Remember being a kid? Remember how you waited for the holidays and the breaks from school that came with them? Imagine finally getting to those glorious off days and being sick! That’s a childhood tragedy. That’s why I’ve put together these winter health tips to ensure that that doesn’t happen.
Wash Hands
This is at the top of any health tip list, in my opinion. Washing hands is your first best step to keeping colds and the flu at bay. Remind your children to wash their hands before eating, after coming home from anywhere, and after they do anything that could involve germs such as taking out the garbage. They should wash their hands with plenty of soap for 20 seconds using the hottest water they can comfortably use.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep is key to great health. Sleep is when our bodies repair themselves. It’s also the time that our bodies do their best work in fighting off all the germs and viruses that cause us to get sick. Ensure your kids get a solid eight hours every night.
Healthy Foods
Healthy foods ensure that our bodies have everything that they need to stay healthy. Focus on lean meat, whole grains, and lots of veggies and fruits. Fruits high in vitamin C are especially recommended this time of year.
Lots of Water
Our bodies are 75% water, so it’s key to stay properly hydrated. When our bodies aren’t properly hydrated, they don’t function at their best, which leaves us open to getting sick. Ensure your kids drink plenty of water every day.
Don’t Neglect Oral Health
One of my most important winter health tips is to keep the kids’ mouths healthy. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the mouth is the window to our health. Did you know that an unhealthy mouth has been linked to liver, kidney, and heart issues? It’s true! It’s important to ensure that the kids brush their teeth for a solid two minutes twice a day, that they floss, and that they use mouthwash to kill any remaining oral bacteria.
That’s only part of it, though. Regular dental checkups are essential for identifying any tooth or gum problems early so they can be addressed as soon as possible. Regular trips to the dentist ensure that our kids have the healthiest mouths that they can, which helps them stay healthy overall.
Florida KidCare – The Most Important of my Winter Health Tips
While good oral care means good overall health, not every child has access to it. The unfortunate truth is that there are currently 257,000 children in Florida without dental insurance, which means they don’t have access to the myriad ways that healthcare can help them be as healthy as possible. However, there is light at the end of the uninsured tunnel. That’s because about 147,000 of those children are most likely eligible for totally free or low-cost health insurance from Florida KidCare.
This healthcare plan offers health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as access to other preventative services that are vital to a child’s health. And what’s more, although Florida KidCare is aimed primarily at helping low-income families get good healthcare, any family can buy into the program at a competitive rate. I used it Florida KidCare with my daughter, and it was the best insurance we’ve ever had!
So if you want to keep the kids healthy this winter, follow these winter health tips. If you don’t have insurance – and even if you do – give Florida KidCare a look. I can say from personal experience that you won’t find a better insurance plan in Florida.
